About this kit: $18

The my first garden kit includes:

  • Sugar snap pea, Pumpkin, Sunflower and Sweet Corn seeds

  • 4 x Peat pots, 4 x Peat pellets and 4 x plant labels

  • Instructions to grow these seeds

Instructions

Sweet corn:

  1. Sow seeds in the Spring. Cover the peat pellet with hot water and wait for it to rise and expand, then place it into peat pot.

  2. Sow seeds at a depth approximately three times the diameter of the seed. Place a few seeds in the peat pellet, cover and gently firm down. Keep moist but not wet until germination (5-10 days).

  3. Once the seedlings have reached approximately 5cm high, plant the peat pot directly into the soil. Space the plants approx 20cm apart so they have plenty of room to grow.

  4. You may need to thin out the seedlings by plucking out any of the smaller seedlings to allow space for the others to grow.

  5. Once the plant has produced a corn cob that is approximately 20cm long, you can harvest to cook and eat.

Sugar Snap Peas:

  1. Sow early Autumn or Spring. Cover the peat pellet with hot water and wait for it to rise and expand, then place it into peat pot.

  2. Sow seeds at a depth approximately three times the diameter of the seed. Place a few seeds in the peat pellet, cover and gently firm down.

  3. keep the seeds moist but not wet during germination. Sit them in a warm or sunny place. Once they are approx 5cm high, you can plant the peat pot and pellet directly into the soil.

  4. You may need to thin out the seedlings by plucking out any of the smaller seedlings to allow space for the others to grow.

  5. They can grow up to 2m high so it is a good idea to grow them against netting or a trellis. Sugar snap peas are best eaten fresh straight off the plant!

Sunflower:

  1. Sow early Spring to early Summer. Cover the peat pellet with hot water and wait for it to rise and expand, then place it into peat pot.

  2. Sow seeds at a depth approximately three times the diameter of the seed. Place a few seeds in the peat pellet, cover and gently firm down.

  3. Once the seedlings are 5-10cm tall you can plant your sunflowers in full sun and space plants 20-30 cm apart.

  4. You may need to thin out the seedlings by plucking out any of the smaller seedlings to allow space for the others to grow.

  5. Sunflowers can grow to 1 - 2 metres tall and may need staking or protection from the wind with a fence near by.

Pumpkin:

  1. Sow in September, October or November. Cover the peat pellet with hot water and wait for it to rise and expand, then place it into peat pot.

  2. Sow seeds at a depth approximately three times the diameter of the seed. Soak the seeds overnight before planting. Place a few seeds in the peat pellet, cover and gently firm down.

  3. Once the seedlings are approximately 5cm high you can plant the peat pot directly into the soil.

  4. You may need to thin out the seedlings by plucking out any of the smaller seedlings to allow space for the others to grow.

  5. Pumpkins will spread so make sure they are planted where they will not smother any other plants.
